Melissa was 4 years old when she felt God call her into medicine, even though she didn’t know Him yet. At the age of 21, during her medical school interviews, she was called to “teach” about healing.

“And why have I called you for this work? Why did I call you by name when you did not know me? It is for the sake of Jacob my servant, Israel my chosen one. I am the Lord; there is no other God.” (Isaiah 45:4-5)

Being raised in a non-Christian home Melissa grew up deceived and misguided. At the age of 7 she had her first and only church experience. It was here that the Holy Spirit touched Melissa deeply. Not knowing where this deep peace and joy had come from or whom this was about, she entered into a 40 year ‘wilderness’ journey trying to relocate the source of this love again. This culminated in a search through various other world religions and spiritual traditions with no success. The night her husband died in an automobile accident she was finally brought face to face with love she had been searching for as God revealed Himself powerfully to her and her children that night.

“If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.” (Jeremiah 29:13)

Melissa loved calling her husband ‘darling’. The night her husband died the first person on the scene of the accident was an off duty policeman named Constable Darling.

The second person on the scene was an off duty ambulance attendant who lovingly took the children and tended to them behind a neighbors fence, out of sight of their dad’s attempted resuscitation.

The third person at the accident was an off duty firefighter. As a child he had lost his dad during a farming accident and had not been able to get to his dad when he died. He immediately ran to the car and jumped into the empty passenger seat next to Melissa's unconscious, exsanguinating husband.

Next arrived the police department who had responded to the 911 call. The police man’s name was Constable Lord.

Melissa’s husband died at the scene of the accident on the side of the road. When the children finally did arrive at the hospital, the emergency room physician who received them was Dr. Sheppard.

Melissa now knows who the Lord and Shepherd is and she is forever grateful. She knows first hand that God has a plan for each of our lives and that He has called each one of us, whether in healthcare or not, to His Great Commission.

Melissa completed Medical School at the University of British Columbia in 1997. She did a rural Family Practice residency at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1999. Melisa then completed a third year of GP specialization in the emerging field of Integrative Medicine through the University of British Columbia, Department of Family Practice in 2003. She consulted as a GP Specialist in Integrative Medicine across Canada, integrating various Complementary and Alternative Modalities into her western medical training for improved patient outcomes.

Melissa loves public speaking and has done this across Canada in hospitals, clinics, and churches. She has spoken to both patient and physician audiences on integrating spirituality into mainstream medical care, inspiring and educating many.

Melissa completed a Diploma in Integrated Clinical Counseling in 2002. She is currently completing her Masters in Ministry.

Melissa lives with her two teenage kids in the home that she and her husband built in rural British Columbia. Their tiny farm is adjacent to a large forested park and close to the ocean. Melissa and her family love the outdoors, exploring both on land and sea and can often be found sailing, kayaking, hiking, biking or camping in God’s amazing outdoors together.
